Shark River Golf Course first opened for play in 1909. The course was designed by Scottish golf pro Joseph "Scotty" I'Anson. Hal Purdy added five new holes and redesigned the others in 1967.
Shark River Golf Course features tight, narrow fairways; deep-faced bunkers; and the challenge of small, well-protected greens. The holes vary from a short, drivable par 4 to a long, risky par 5, with some strong par 3 holes mixed in. Even at its modest length of 6457 yards, this course offers a stern but fair test to all golfers.
Shark River is a par 71 that has a USGA course rating of 70.3 and USGA slope rating of 130 from the blue tees.
Shark River is well-maintained golf course. The fairways range from narrow to wide, and some are tree lined. The greens vary in size and speed, and there are no water hazards. However, plenty of sand and grass bunkers have been incorporated into the course design. The flat terrain is easy to walk. The signature hole is #9, a 586-yard, par 5, requiring a tee shot from off an elevated tee box, then subsequent shots down a narrow, tree-lined fairway to a large green.

Nice shape for April. A bit wet in spots. The greens were in great shape. The tees not in great shape. The fairways were average. I play this course a lot, for the value and proximity.

ONE TEMPORARY GREEN BECAUSE GRASS DIED DURING SUMMER. COMING BACK NOW. Fairways have a lot of dirt areas. Many bunkers are gravel pits. New tees are not usable; grass died. Greenskeeper lost the course during the summer.
